Register Now for Our Fall 2012 New Tutor Training!

This training is designed for people who wish to tutor a Literacy Council of Greater Waukesha student and have attended an agency orientation.  See the New Tutor Orientation Dates section below for remaining orientation dates.  Tutor training encompasses key elements of English as a second language (ESL) and basic skills instruction.  You must attend all four nights of the program.

Day 1: Tuesday, October 23 (6 p.m. – 9 p.m.)
Day 2: Wednesday, October 24 (6 p.m. – 9 p.m.)
Day 3: Tuesday, October 30 (6 p.m. – 9 p.m.)
Day 4: Wednesday, October 31 (6 p.m. – 9 p.m.)

Join Us for an a Free Informational Program on Voting and Elections

LCGW is inviting all tutors and students to attend a free program on 10/17/12 to understand the election and voting process.  Even if your student cannot vote, he or she may be interestsed in the culture of voting.

This program will be led by Mary Kazmierczak, who has been political science instructor at Carroll and Marquette University, and will be held at the Waukesha County Technical College (WCTC) Broadway Campus. While an RSVP is not required, it would be helpful if you contact Cathy Kozlowicz at LCGW if you plan on attending.

Cuba, 1961: 250,000 volunteers taught 700,000 people to read and write in one year. 100,000 of the teachers were under 18 years old. Over half were women. "Maestra" explores this story through the personal testimonies of the young women who went out to teach literacy in rural communities across the island—and found themselves deeply transformed in the process.

Join Us for LCGW's 20th Annual Corporate Spelling Bee

6/1/12 - “The Roaring Twentieth”, the Literacy Council of Greater Waukesha’s 20th annual
corporate spelling bee, will be held on June 20, 2012 at the Country Springs Hotel.

The spelling bee is LCGW’s major annual fundraiser and is meant to generate the funding vital in
providing books and other program materials for our students.

Your participation in the spelling bee will go a long way in assuring that we meet our
goals. LCGW provides one-on-one tutoring for individuals of all ages that live or work in Waukesha
County. Each year more than 250 students walk through our doors and meet weekly with
their tutors to make meaningful changes in their everyday lives.

05/09/12 - The LCGW will hold an abbreviated version of its fall 2011 tutor training, encompassing key elements of English as a Second Language (ESL) and basic skills tutor training.

Buy a Dr. Seuss Book for a Child!

02/08/12 - In celebration of Dr. Seuss’ birthday on March 2nd, the Literacy Council will distribute new Dr. Seuss books to needy children throughout Waukesha County. For only a $9 donation, you can buy a Dr. Seuss book for a child who does not have one!

Please print/mail a donation form, donate securely online, or go to the Book Café (Waukesha), The Learning Shop (Brookfield), or Book & Company (Oconomowoc) to buy a Dr. Seuss book.

Play "Sherlock's Clues for Cash"

10/10/11 - In conjuctions with Waukesha Reads' 2011 program, LCGW is hosting a competition for cash in downtown Waukesha from 10/10/11 through 10/31/11 based on the characters from "The Hound of the Baskervilles." Game boards are available at Martha Merrell's Books and The Steaming Cup.

Ten local businesses will be posting clues and all clues eventually can be used at the display window in the five points to solve the mystery. Those who successfully solve the clues will be eligible to win a prize.

You can play over several days or just a few hours on a Saturday afternoon. The game is fun for tweens, teens, and adults. And the minimum donation is now just $1, so more people can play.


"90 Tutors In 90 Days" Starts September 8th

08/15/11 - The LCGW wants to recruit 90 new literacy tutors in just 90 days. Consider attending a New Tutor Orientation and make a difference in someone's life through the gift of literacy. Our 90 Tutors In 90 Days recruitment challenge runs Sept. 8 through Dec. 8.

Literacy Council's 19th Annual Corporate Spelling Bee Results

06/29/11 - The Literacy Council of Greater Waukesha was proud to host its 19th Annual Corporate Spelling Bee on June 9th, 2011 at the Country Springs Hotel in Waukesha. The event, LCGW’s largest fundraiser of the year, was sponsored by Clarcorp Industrial Sales of Waukesha.

Thank you to all of our participants and corporate sponsors, including the Mystery Writers of America for being a program partner.

Business and organizations were encouraged to sponsor an employee team or non-profit team that might want to spell, and the public was invited to watch competing teams vie for the title of Best Corporate Speller in Waukesha County.


LCGW's 2011 Scrabble Games Were a Success

02/28/11 - The Literacy Council of Greater Waukesha hosted its seventh annual Scrabble Games fundraiser on February 20, 2011 at Steinhafel's Super Store on Highway F in Waukesha.

Contestants did not play the usual form of Scrabble. In our version, team members work together and against the clock to quickly fill up their board with as many high-value words as possible. Corporate and independent teams participated with prizes awarded in both categories.

Congratulations to the winners:

  • Corporate Team Champion: Waukesha County Technical College, composed of Barbara Nordberg, Josie Bellone, Sarah Finesilver, Drew Niedercorn, Cindy Schiller and Lynn Spangler.
  • Independent Team Champion: Carroll University, composed of Donna Jansen, Adam Jansen, Bob Jansen and Cristie Spoerl.
